PURPOSE and OBJECTIVES
Founded: 1972 PURPOSE: The purposes of the American College of Nuclear Medicine are to advance the science of nuclear medicine and improve its benefits to patients, encourage improved and continuing education for practitioners in nuclear medicine and allied fields and study the socioeconomic aspects of the practice of nuclear medicine. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: The College is governed by a president, president-elect, vice-president, vice-president elect, secretary/treasurer, and historian, and administered by an executive director. The College also has a Board of Representatives. ORGANIZATIONAL TYPE: The American College of Nuclear Medicine is a 501 (c)(3) organization. Since ACNM does not engage in lobbying activity, 100% of membership dues are deductible for most members or associations under Section 162 of the Internal Revenue Code as an ordinary and necessary business expense. MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATIONS: Membership in the College is in six classes: charter members, members, associate members, fellows, and corporate members. Full membership is available to physicians who have had a residency and ten years experience in nuclear medicine, or a residency, one year approved residency training in internal medicine, pathology, or radiology, and five years experience in nuclear medicine, or certification by an American Medical Specialty Board and three years experience in nuclear medicine, or certification in nuclear medicine by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. Scientists with advanced degrees and certification by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine, or who have equivalent certification, are also eligible for full membership. Associate members are those who practice nuclear medicine science, but do not meet the above qualifications. Fellows traditionally are those who have made outstanding contributions to the specialty of nuclear medicine. Honorary fellows are those non-members who have contributed to the science or practice of nuclear medicine. PUBLICATIONS: The College publishes a newsletter for its members four times per year. The contents of the newsletter and hotlines alert the members of current happenings affecting the practice of nuclear medicine.
ANNUAL MEETING: The ACNM holds its Annual Meeting each year during February or March in the southern United States. The meeting is held in conjunction with the Mid-Winter meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. The educational objectives of these meetings are to provide a wide range of Clinical Practice nuclear medicine topics to attendees. Outstanding speakers are selected to deliver leading edge and practical subject materials. Typically, 10 hours of CME credits are provided. The awarding of Fellowships are a highlight of each year's meeting.
