FDA Food Fortification – In March, 1996, the Food and Drug Adminstration ruled that companies which produced certain grain products, such as bread, flour, cornmeal, pasta, and rice are now required to fortify these products with folic acid. This decision was based on concern that pregnant women were not receiving an adequate amount of folic acid to prevent neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida.

Evaluating a Managed Care Contract 2

If patients and referral sources are the same under this contract, as in the past, experience should be a reliable guide. But if you will see new patients referred from doctors you don’t know well, you would be wise to seek a modified fee-for-service contract until utilization patterns are apparent. If the plan insists on full risk or nothing, it may be your clue to back away.
